The Water Problem in Torrevieja
Understanding what comes out of your taps is the first step to solving it.
Very Hard Water
Torrevieja water measures between 40 and 50 degrees French hardness (fH). For context, anything above 30 fH is classed as "very hard." This causes limescale buildup in kettles, washing machines, dishwashers, and on shower screens. Over time, it shortens the lifespan of every water-using appliance in your home and increases your energy bills.
High Chlorine
During the summer months especially, chlorine levels in the Torrevieja supply are increased to cope with higher demand and warmer temperatures. You can smell it when you run a bath and taste it in a glass of water. While chlorine keeps the supply safe at a municipal level, it is not something you want to be drinking or bathing in every day.
Desalinated Water
Much of Torrevieja's supply comes from the Torrevieja desalination plant. While this is perfectly safe, the desalination process leaves a different mineral profile than you might be used to from the UK or Ireland. Many expats find the taste and mouthfeel unpleasant, which is why bottled water sales are so high in the area.
